Advocacy
During our first days at PFLAG, many of us were too busy dealing with our own feelings and family issues to think about the big picture. While many of our fears about homosexuality and gender identity were wrong, we quickly realized that some were correct. LGBT persons face discrimination at school, on the job, and in their family lives. They are more likely than their peers to be harassed at school, to be the victims of violent hate crimes, to be turned down for employment, to be fired, and to be asked to leave their religious communities.
Over 1000 rights granted to heterosexuals through civil marriage are denied to gay families, including families with children. Gay partners cannot make medical decisions for each other, be recognized on their partners’ health insurance policy, or inherit property from one another without a lot of legal paperwork, and sometimes, not even then. Non-biological parents in a gay partnership have no parental rights if their partners die.
Discrimination against LGBT persons exists, and makes their lives more difficult. Many of us feel the need to speak out on behalf of our children and friends who are unjustly deprived of fundamental human and civil rights. That’s why advocacy is also an important part of PFLAG’s mission.
