Education
All of us live in a world of “alternative ‘facts’ ”
When you are looking for information about sexual orientation and gender identity,
it’s important to go to websites that fact check their assertions.
All of the information you find on our website comes from research-based studies reported by reliable sources such as the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Sociological Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Association of Family Physicians.
These groups have demonstrated that common assumptions about homosexuality and gender identity are false. Some of the following misstatements are things you may have heard or believed: “all gays are promiscuous;” “LGBTQ persons ‘recruit’ younger people and confuse them about their sexual orientation or gender identity;” “Gay men have weak fathers and strong mothers,” “Lesbians hate men;” “Gay parents damage their children,” “Transgender people are mentally ill and unstable.” “Reparative therapy can cure homosexuality and gender dysphoria.”
Where can you get reliable information? Start here. PFLAG Los Angeles has developed four brochures in an easy to read format that provides answers to commonly asked questions. One addresses the concerns of LGBTQ and questioning youth, one provides basic information for parents, one is designed for transgender people and their families, and one for LGBTQ persons and families who are struggling with religion.
You can download them here in English or Spanish.
