Hispanic Heritage Month: Celebrating Wilson Cruz’s Trailblazing Visibility

For Hispanic Heritage Month, PFLAG Los Angeles is celebrating actor and advocate Wilson Cruz, whose career has helped make more room for LGBTQ+ and Latine people on screen.

When Cruz appeared as Rickie Vasquez on “My So-Called Life” in 1994, TV audiences saw something they had rarely—if ever—seen before: an openly gay actor playing an openly gay series regular on network TV. He later brought that same honesty and visibility to Dr. Hugh Culber on “Star Trek: Discovery,” helping give LGBTQ+ viewers a fuller, more human kind of representation.

For Cruz, representation has never stopped at the screen.

A longtime LGBTQ+ advocate, he has used his visibility to speak up for LGBTQ+ people, particularly LGBTQ+ people of color, and to help create space for stories and experiences that historically have been left out of mainstream media.

His career is a reminder of how much it matters to see LGBTQ+ people not simply included, but portrayed as complicated, joyful, vulnerable, and fully human.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, PFLAG LA honors Wilson Cruz for helping expand what LGBTQ+ and Latine representation can look like—and for continuing to use his voice in support of our community.
