Jewish American Heritage Month: Edie Windsor Helped Advance Marriage Equality
Edie Windsor was a LGBTQ+ rights activist whose landmark Supreme Court case helped change the course of marriage equality in the United States.
After the federal government refused to recognize her marriage to her late wife, Thea Spyer, Windsor challenged the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court. In 2013, the Supreme Court ruled in United States v. Windsor that key parts of DOMA were unconstitutional, becoming a major step toward nationwide marriage equality.
Windsor’s advocacy helped affirm the dignity of LGBTQ+ families and expanded legal recognition for same-sex couples across the country. Her story became a powerful example of how personal experiences can drive lasting social change.
Born to a Jewish family in Philadelphia, Windsor often spoke about identity, resilience, and the importance of standing up for equality. Her work left a lasting impact on LGBTQ+ rights and inspired generations of advocates and families.
This Jewish American Heritage Month, PFLAG Los Angeles honors Edie Windsor and her enduring legacy of advocacy, courage, and love.
