Women’s History Month: Tammy Baldwin Expanded LGBTQ+ Representation in Government

Tammy Baldwin made history in 2012 when she became the first openly gay person elected to the United States Senate. Her election marked a major milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in national government and reflected decades of progress in the movement for equality.

Before serving in the Senate, Baldwin represented Wisconsin in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than a decade. Throughout her career in public service, she has worked to expand healthcare access, strengthen economic security, and advance protections for LGBTQ+ people.

Baldwin’s historic election helped increase visibility for LGBTQ+ people in public office and demonstrated that LGBTQ+ Americans belong in every part of civic life, including the highest levels of government.

Her leadership continues to show how representation can help shape policies and conversations that affect communities across the country.

This Women’s History Month, we recognize Tammy Baldwin for expanding opportunity and representation for LGBTQ+ people in government.
