PFLAG LA Responds to Federal Bill Targeting LGBTQ+ Books and Resources in Schools

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 31, 2026) — PFLAG Los Angeles — the L.A. chapter of the nation’s largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for and with LGBTQ+ people and those who love them — opposes H.R. 7661, the “Stop the Sexualization of Children Act,” a federal bill that would restrict access to books, classroom materials, and school programs that include transgender people and experiences.

“This bill puts politics ahead of students,” said Anthony Eftimeo (he, they, them), PFLAG LA Vice President. “Restricting access to books and information about transgender identity doesn’t protect young people. It isolates them, limits understanding, and creates real harm in classrooms that should be safe and inclusive for all students.”

If it moves forward, schools would be put in a position where removing books and scaling back programs becomes the safer option. Fewer stories, fewer perspectives. Fewer chances for students to recognize themselves or understand someone else. Educators would be left sorting out what’s allowed and what isn’t, instead of focusing on teaching.

“This is about whether students have access to information that reflects the world around them,” Eftimeo added. “When that access is limited, it doesn’t just affect LGBTQ+ students. It limits understanding for everyone and undermines the role schools play in preparing young people to live and learn in diverse communities.”

PFLAG LA remains committed to supporting LGBTQ+ people, their families, and allies through education, advocacy, and support, and to advancing policies that protect inclusive learning environments and student well-being.
